Country Briefings - Report 3: Romania
The Board of the Adoption Authority of Ireland and the Authority's Research Advisory Committee are delighted to announce the third in a series of five planned country-specific briefings. This particular research report looks at the adoption of children from Romania into Ireland between 1989 and 2003.
In launching the report, the Authority's Chairperson Orlaith Traynor said, 'This report shows the close adoption history between Ireland and Romania, with many children adopted from orphanages after the Ceaușescu regime. It is notable that many of these children are now adults'.
- Between 1989 and 2003, 808 children were adopted from Romania by parents resident in Ireland.
- Adoptions from Romania comprise the third largest proportion of all intercountry adoptions into Ireland, and account for 16% of Ireland's total ICA population.
- The average age of a child adopted from Romania was 1 year and 5 months.
- Today, individuals who were adopted from Romania into Ireland range from 21 - 38 years old. The average age of an adopted individual from Romania is 30 years old.
