The next event that is planned is for children aged 7+ and teenagers on a day learning Bushcraft skills which is run by the Western Bushcraft Skills http://www.westernbushcraftskills.com/contact-us on Sunday 9th June 2019. Our plan is to split the group into two - children aged 7 - 12 and teenagers.
During the day there will be a chance to do some shelter building, fire lighting, wild cooking, archery, orienteering and woodland games.
The event is designed with activities that will provide a chance for the children and teenagers to meet up and make new friends while having loads of fun.
It is recognised that it is very important for children to make friends with those that have a similar story. It has been the experience of other support groups that the children that built these friendships stood them in good stead over the years.
Mary D Healy (ICCG) summaries the philosophy below:
"There are a number of important lessons we have learned from the experiences of older adoptees in our community. One is that it can be a great support to meet others who share a similar story of adoption. In ICCG we have worked very hard over the last few years to develop networks and friendship opportunities for our young people as well as establishing mentoring opportunities. As adults we can promote the culture of the country of our children's birth but for the young people sometimes that in itself is a difference and so networking opportunities are fun, age specific and regionally and countrywide based.”
It was successfully ran last year for children and their dads - I know all had a great time. We have a limited amount of spaces so book your space(s)
