Gender Recognition Register
The Register of Gender Recognition of Intercountry Adoptions records a person's legal gender change when they were born abroad and adopted.
What is required?
- A valid Certificate of Gender Recognition issued by the Department of Social Protection
- The adoption must be registered in
- The Register of Foreign Adoptions (registration before 1 November 2010) or
- The Register of Intercountry Adoptions (registration after 1 November 2010)

1 Documentation required
Ensure you have the following documentation:
- A copy of the Gender Recognition Certificate as issued by the Department of Social Protection
- A copy of the notification letter from the Department of Social Protection which accompanied the Gender Recognition Certificate.
- A copy of the previous entry in the Register of Foreign Adoptions or the Register of Intercountry Adoptions

2 Apply online
Applications should be made by completing the relevant form and must be accompanied by the documentation outlined in Step 1.

3 Entry is granted
Once entry is granted you will be notified by email.

4 Apply for a copy
Once an entry in the Register of Gender Recognition of Intercountry Adoptions is granted, people can apply for a copy of an entry in the Register. There is a charge for this service:
- 1 copy costs €20
- 2 copies cost €40
- 3 copies cost €60
