Register of Intercountry Adoptions
To register an adoption you need to submit an application, by post, to the Adoption Authority of Ireland to request registration of the adoption under Irish law.
Step-by-step guide to Registering an Intercountry Adoption
Progress indicator:
-
1 Gather proof of the foreign adoption
Your application must be accompanied by proof of the foreign adoption:
- The original of the adoption order made in the foreign country.
- If the order is in a language other than English you must also provide a certified English translation of the adoption order. The translation must be completed by a registered translation service and cannot be translated by the applicant.
-
2 Apply to register the adoption
Apply for an entry in the Register of Intercountry Adoptions:
- Download and complete the relevant application form (see forms A, B, C at the bottom of the page). Note that each application form carries its own set of documentation requirements in addition to the adoption order. You will find the relevant list of documents required in the checklist of documents at the beginning of the relevant application form.
- Send your completed application form along with your proof of the foreign adoption (from step 1) to:
Intercountry Adoption Unit
Adoption Authority of Ireland
Shelbourne House
Shelbourne Road
Ballsbridge
Dublin 4
D04 H6F6
-
3 The Authority examines the application
The Authority examines whether the adoption is capable of recognition in line with the adoption type, inclusive of whether the adoption complies with the definition of a “foreign adoption“ contained in Section 1 of the Adoption Act, 1991.
-
4 The adoption is registered
Once the Authority is satisfied, an entry can be made in the Register of Intercountry Adoptions. Once registered, the person’s adoption has the same legal status as if the adoption was made in this country.
-
5 Appy for a certificate
- Certificates or extracts from the Register of Intercountry Adoptions can be obtained for a fee.
- The certificate issued is a certified copy of the entry made in the Register of Intercountry Adoptions.
- For legal purposes this certificate has the status of a birth certificate.
